i have this, so i'm forced to take a break. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice. i mustn't type until further notice.

#fail

i was meaning to attend the danaghie & co poetry reading last night so that i could write about it here, but the restaurant took forever to prepare our food (just around the corner! we sat down at 8 pm!) and when we got to the location at 9.30 pm it was packed and there was no way to get in without interrupting. [phew, that was a long sentence!] so i just waved hi to kim through the window and buggered off... what a shame, sorry joseph!

those of you who know me...

know i'm useless when it comes to correct word counts. so it seems only logical that what i thought to be 27 norm pages are actually 36 norm pages. still not much, i know, i know. i have finished the fifth proper edit now and, as a next step, will have another look at the original draft to see whether maybe there was something in it i deleted but that's actually still useable. the only problem poses my printer that has been acting funny ever since i have been using improper refill cartridges. it used to work just fine in the beginning, it has been telling me for a while now, though that the colour cartridge is empty (i never even used nor replaced it!) and that because of that i can't print anything in black and white, either. grrrr.

draft and rough translation

lese eure stimmen / stimmt

read your voices / right
they are now silence
like silence that's / outside of every brain
they are not voices / right
they are your silence / the deep breaths
that stick to your lines like the ones
that are outside your brainness / on paper.

the other day on the tube i wrote a poem. i keyed it into my mobile and soon thereafter accidentally deleted it. i rewrote what i remembered and accidentally deleted that as well. now all i can remember of it still are three lines:

flogen uns seekrähen
(seekrähen, gibt's das?)
um unsre gedankenzufuhr

bizarre

i've known selma meerbaum-eisinger's poems for a long while now. not sure at all what to think of this project. i guess it's okay in that it links up poetry with pop culture. there's a lot of kitsch in selma's less well-known poems, though, so i suppose she would have approved of this project. to me, however, the choice of some of the singers seems a little bit off. any opinions?

lazy

okay, so i started translating that poem of 26 july 2008. somehow i can't make it work in english, but here are parts of it in case you're interested in what it's about:

tilts the horizon in front of the scuttle up
down and down up tilts unreasonableness.

[...]

all those first times are in flower still flowering
that valley's bed up and down by that stream and yet
time passed into nothing into just not passing at all

that sheer equatorial problem... [...]

[...]

up down up and down the unreasonableness.

unfortunately, i'm not going to make this year's open mike. i have started a couple of stories, but at this point lack the discipline and time to finish them properly. on a different note, the sound of the texts the jury is looking for is somewhat stylized and i don't feel like serving that right now. but who knows, i might participate next year?

priorities

with exams coming up in may and four full days of work per week, i should be using all free time to study, but the longer i'm not writing much, the more ideas for short stories spring to mind. there's also this novel project, that i'm thinking of undertaking once finished here... its protagonist keeps wandering around in my head, distracting me. write me a room, it keeps whispering, and a friend. i'm tempted, so tempted...

it will have to wait for a while, though, i guess.

most certainly
it’s all about the weak lungs

the wild veil swings
the will is wanting to

the sparkling night ring
looks as if it fits my finger

packing

just realized i brought my notebook on holiday with me and haven't written a word into it during the past three weeks. that's a bit disappointing. i did write a couple of poems in draft emails, but these are so bad that i don't dare putting them on display here.

there's also the mdr literary price. i'd like to partake and hope i'll come up with something in time - i've become a little unoriented lately when it comes to my writing, i'm afraid.

minky down-ing aka "look out, folks, my daughter strips!" (a line written by stephen gyllenhaal)

in an act of planned, yet utterly delusional bravery, i walked up to stephen gyllenhaal (indeed, jake's father) the other day and handed over an exposé for a movie plus four pages of screenplay. i think at first he thought i wanted his son's number or something, but then he agreed to have a look at the stuff. why don't you direct it yourself, he asked, there are too few women directors out there. i said i thought that was a neat idea, wondering whether that is what all normal l.a. people do.

...so much for my diablo cody moment (see one of the posts below).

then stephen and a couple of british poets read their poetry at the oxfam winter poetry reading 2007, up in marylebone. alistair noon of no man's land (lauter niemand) and bordercrossing berlin, who was reading as well, told me about the event. it was the last one in the series, with many brilliant poets participating.

alistair also showed me a nearby poetry library the next day, which i will definitely become a member of first thing on tuesday.

hmpf.

i just found out i didn't make it into the final twenty of this year's open mike writing competition. now that's a bit of a disappointment, as it also has an effect on my planning to visit frankfurt in early november. personally, though, i liked the story i sent them even better than the one i mailed to the fm4 wortlaut competition. but yeah, whatever, maybe next year.

06 September 2007

day 167

writing this story is friggin' torture. i re-arranged and rewrote five out of six pages now (by hand!!), changes which i will still have to key in later tonight. that's ok, though, as i will have a finished draft by tomorrow night, which i can then edit for a third time on saturday. things are going slowly, but surely as usual.

04 September 2007

day 165

i'm at 1'694 words at the moment, page no. 5 of the story. it's tricky this time around, i'm not yet happy with the overall sound of the text. writing, at the moment, is only limited fun. in spite of this, i'll try and stick to my plan of finishing it by friday evening, so that i can let it lie around for a couple more days before sending it in. i've thought about pulling out of the competition as well, but since half of lauter niemand is partaking and i would like to top my time in berlin off with a presentable piece, that's not an option.

day 151

(picture taken from postsecret.)

i have a couple of story ideas, one of which includes chemistry. that's weird, because i never even fully understood the periodic system of the elements. there ain't too much time left... i should absolutely be starting writing something by the end of this week. i would like to get back at writing some good stuff again, poetry or whatever, but i'm still only pondering mediocre ideas.
